Lake Texoma Fall Bass Fishing

Lake Texoma fishing guide
Most people know Lake Texoma as a great striper bass fishing lake, but it also an excellent fishery for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, blue catfish, crappie and sand bass.

Recently, a friend and I went fishing with Ray Farrior, owner of Snowgoose Guide Service.  We did a combo trip - fish for our limit of striper - and then go on the hunt for big largemouth and smallmouth bass.

We had a GREAT trip with Ray, catching lots of stripers by the Roosevelt Bridge.  And I must say, Ray is a professional through and through.  His boat was impeccable; very clean, well organized,  and safety gear readily available on both sides of the boat.  I was very impressed with how he approaches his fishing guide business.

Although the stripers are a bit smaller than usual this year due to the shad die off over the winter, Ray still got us right where we needed to be and the action was excellent.  The trip took a very interesting turn after we limited out on striper and went on the hunt for bass.  My friend hooked into something big and it took awhile to get it in the boat.  Once he got it close to the boat, we all could see that it was a monster largemouth!  He ended up catching the biggest bass of his life - and the biggest bass ever hauled into a boat that I've been in - an 8.5 pound HAWG!  It was awesome!!  I was also able to get some video - take a look at it here.

I highly recommend that you book a fishing trip with Ray Farrior on Lake Texoma.  You will have the best trip of your life.  Thank you Ray for an awesome fishing trip!!

Lake Ft. Cobb 10.6 lb. Lake Record Bass

Lake Fort Cobb Oklahoma Record Largemouth Bass
When Charles Coffman of Ardmore nabbed a 10.6 lb. lake record largemouth bass from Fort Cobb Lake April 18, fisheries biologists were pleased, not only because the fish was the first known largemouth bass over 10 lbs. from the western Oklahoma lake, but also because it was caught in an area recently targeted for improving fishing opportunities.

The fish was caught from a new shallow-water brush pile near the new dock that was installed by Fort Cobb State Park and the Bureau of Reclamation. The brush pile, created by personnel with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, was part of an effort to draw fish to concentrated areas so anglers can enjoy improved success.

“We pursued the shallow-water brush project after results of last year’s bass sampling showed quick returns — adult bass found and used the trees within days — and it’s nice to see that it translated to angler success as well,” said Larry Cofer, southwest region fisheries supervisor for the Wildlife Department.

The shallow-water brush project at Ft. Cobb involved cutting and placing over 500 cedar trees in eight locations across the lake, and more than half of the trees are visible to anglers in no-wake zones of the lake.

“We already received several good comments from bass and crappie anglers and look forward to many more fishing success stories from Ft. Cobb,” Cofer said.

New Lake Wister Record Crappie - 4 lbs!!

Lake Wister Oklahoma Record Crappie
When Lake Wister angler Jon Duvall and his cousin Clint decided to take a few youngsters fishing April 17, they ended up catching very few fish, but one reeled in by Duvall was a real whopper by any crappie angler’s standards.

Duvall’s crappie weighed 4.2 lb. and measured 17.75 inches in length, setting a Wister lake record not likely to be surpassed for some time. He caught the slab on a jig in the lower end of the lake.

Up to that point, only one crappie had been caught — one landed by Clint on the first cast of the trip. Though Duvall said that first fish was a nice crappie and the fishing party was excited about a potentially great fishing trip, the fishing did not pick up.

“We fished and fished, but caught nothing,” Duvall said “Finally, right before it started to rain, I caught the biggest crappie we had ever seen.”

Editor's Note: WOW!! Now that, I think, is the biggest crappie I've ever seen!!!

Lake Tenkiller Smallies

Bass fishing at Lake Tenkiller Oklahoma with fishing guide Rocky Thomas Jr.
For readers of this blog, you know that I always treat myself to a fishing trip for my birthday. And like last year, I went back to Lake Tenkiller for a great smallies trip with fishing guide Rocky Thomas Jr. My fishing buddy Harry joined in and the three of us had a great time out on the lake.

I was armed with my favorite soft bait, the 4" Maniac Salt Stick, and like last year it delivered once again. There's nothing like wacky-rigging it and bouncing it along the layered rocky shoals of Tenkiller to get that ferocious strike from a smallmouth bass!

We were also product testing the new 6" Maniac Minnow which proved to be an awesome bait. The chartreuse model produced the most strikes and fish. The various models of white also did well, but the bass clearly went after the chartreuse more often.

Even though the weather was iffy the whole time, a great day was had by all!!

If you would like to experience smallmouth fishing at it's finest, I highly recommend a fishing trip with Thomas Guide Service. Rocky will get you on fish!

Country Music Star Blake Shelton Lands Lake Record Paddlefish

Lake Hudson Oklahoma Record Paddlefish caught by Blake Shelton

Country music star and avid outdoorsman Blake Shelton of Tishomingo landed a lake record paddlefish April 13 when he reeled in a 40 lb. fish from below the Lake Hudson dam.

The fish measured 41 inches in length and was caught by way of snagging — the most common approach to catching “spoonbills.” Paddlefish do not strike lures or live bait but instead feed on tiny organisms called plankton.

“I have been an outdoorsman my whole life and I love to hunt and fish,” Shelton, 33, said. “I have been fishing as long as I can remember, and catching a paddlefish is the most exciting kind of fishing I have ever experienced.”

Shelton’s lake record comes just as the paddlefish angling in northeast Oklahoma is peaking. The best time to fish for paddlefish is during the spring (usually late March to mid-April) when the fish move up from reservoirs into rivers for their annual spawning run. The fish travel upstream and become concentrated, making it easier for anglers to locate good fishing spots.

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s lake record fish program was initiated in 2008 to recognize big fish from certain lakes and the anglers who catch them.

The program has grown from about a dozen lakes at its inception to more than 40 lakes today. So anglers all over the state can go fishing just for leisure, but they can also go with a sense of competitive drive in hopes of putting their name in a record book.

Species eligible for spots in the lake records book include blue, channel and flathead catfish and largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass in addition to crappie, paddlefish, striped bass, striped bass hybrids, sunfish (combined) walleye/saugeye and white bass. Minimum weights are set for each species and are detailed on the Wildlife Department’s Web site at http://www.wildlifedepartment.com/.

Anglers who catch a potential record from a participating lake should contact designated business locations around the lake that are enrolled as lake record keepers. A listing of official lake record keepers is available on http://www.wildlifedepartment.com/.

Once it has been determined that an angler has landed a record fish, the media is notified and the public will be able to view information about the catch on the Wildlife Department’s Web site at http://www.wildlifedepartment.com/.

An easily-operated search feature is available on the Web site that allows those interested to view a wealth of lake record fish information, ranging from the size of record fish caught to what kind of bait or rod and reel was used to catch them.

All past and current state record fish are registered in the lake record fish program as records for their respective lakes.

For more information about the lake record fish program, or for more on bass fishing in Oklahoma, log on to http://www.wildlifedepartment.com/.

Preparing for a Crappie Fishing Trip

Lake Eufaula fishing guide Oklahoma crappie Oklahoma Fishing Guide Dusty Keener sends us this report from Lake Eufaula:

Without a doubt, there is nothing like the taste of cold water crappie. In my opinion, it is the best of all table fish. With many ways to prepare crappie, my favorite is fried with yellow cornbread batter.
Today would be a good time to prepare for this season's crappie fishing trips. It doesn't matter if you fish from the bank, boat docks or out of a boat. Preparation is the key to a successful fishing trip.

For me this time is spent cleaning & oiling reels and spooling on some new mono line. You can get by with heavier pound test if the water you plan to fish is stained or else use a lighter pound test line if fishing clear water.

Other prep chores included reorganizing the tackle box, and making notes of what we need to pick up in the way of tackle supplies. I also spend some time tying fresh knots, some with jigheads and others with gold hooks for minnows. I like a 1/8 ounce jighead with a plastic filler similar to a road runner or tube jig; dark colors for dingy water and yellow, white or lite colors for clear water.

If you have a boat you should charge batteries, check and stock life jackets, extra anchors with good rope front and back, trailer tires properly inflated, a flashlight, a fire extinguisher and a small bag of tools will come in handy (trust me).

Some of my fondest memories while growing up was spending the weekend fishing the spring crappie bite at Lake Eufaula. Now that I'm guiding fishing trips from our home north of McAlester is a dream come true!

When I was young, we started out crappie fishing from the bank at night or day and whenever we had a chance, we would load up the fishin' stuff and head for the lake. With slip corks and 2 gold hook crappie rigs baited with minnows, we would spend hours fishing from the bank.

One trick I learned during all these year are that while fishing from a boat dock or out of a boat, and fishing straight down with a open bale spin cast type reel and you start catching crappie, place a rubber band around your spool, before you reel in the fish, to mark the exact depth of your catch. Crappe are repetitious, and if your lucky enough to catch a few, just stay with it. There's a lot more crappie that repeat that same pattern of the fish you caught and will be back for more.

And finally, to maximize your fun, take someone you enjoy spending time with fishing. After a hard week at work this will help you forget or help solve a lot of problems and a weekend at the lake can be the best stress reducing medicine available!

Editor's Note: Thanks for sharing those tips with us Dusty! If you would like to go fishing with Dusty on Lake Eufaula or Lake Atoka, visit his website at www.DandKguideservice.com or call him at 918-470-7133 or 918-470-6422.

Big Lake Sooner Blue Catfish

Lake Sooner Oklahoma Fishing Guide Big Blue Catfish

Oklahoma Fishing Guide David Clark sent in this report from Lake Sooner:

What a day of fishing and catching. We started out catching Hybrids(wipers) just about as fast as we could keep the poles in the water. Then this BIG BLUE came along. Didn't quite have the equipment for him but we made it.

After about 3 or 4 big runs and about 30 minutes we got him in the boat. Thought we was going to have to pull anchor, but ended up not having to. I was using 10lb test so I was trying to be real careful.

My scales wouldn't go that high so I called a good friend and he put a calculator to it. The fish measured 47" length by 32" girth. When muptiplyed out that comes to 61 lbs. After we got the Blue in the boat the Hybrid bite slowed down (I figured the high fiven, dancing and hollering might of spooked them) so we moved to another spot and continued on there.

When we left after about 5 hours we figured we caught between 45 to 50 Hybrids. All of the Hybrids were caught on downlines on live shad, most were on the small side. The Blue was caught on live shad on a free line with a 1/4 oz weight, he was on the big side :). The water temp. in the discharge was 54degs.

Editor's Note: Wow! What a great fish David!! Guess you are going to buy a new scale that goes up to 100?!? If you would like to go fishing with David Clark, contact him at 918-724-6786 or visit his site at www.FishOnOK.com.
