Fishing actually shut off early in the morning but manage a decent catch. I started by boating three decent bass for Tom Steed and then tried for some Hybrid. I have caught several hybrid lately in the 5lb - 8lb range and what a great fish for it. These are coming from 20 - 30 ' down and nothing could be better for a terrific fight.

Mike D

Holiday Hybrids w/ Lead Babies Slabs on Lake Tom Steed

<img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; during the busy Holiday weekend, but I just couldn't do it.

I tried a little trolling this morning but the fish were small and the bite was a little slow so I found the big ones on my fish finder and started the slabbing.

Caught these nice hybrids on Lead Babies Slabs in 30 feet of water and what a blast I had bringing them to the surface.

I really need to get a net that doesn't snag the hooks because I spent most of my time just trying to free my slabs from the net after the catch.

One thing that you need to make sure you do is follow the lure down with your line just slightly tensioned so you don't miss the taps on the fall but when you feel it set the hook hard and Fish ON!!!!

Mike Diehl, futurepromike@gmail.com

Lead Babies Slab's wear them out on Tom Steed

<img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; fishing for sand bass. All I can say is "Fish On and on and on.!!!!!!" I had started out looking for large mouth but they were not to be found so I decided to try the sand bass and what a blast I had. I simply could not keep up with the fish using the Lead Babies Slabs.

I was using both the 2oz Long minnows and the Rattlin Mary fishing the Long Minnows in deep water where the glow in the dark model simply slayed them in the stained conditions and the Rattlin Mary excelled in the shallows where there wasn't much room for the bait to fall. The Rattlin Mary works great both deep and shallow but when your fishing in only two to three feet the rattles on this lure brings them running. At times they were hitting this lure so hard it was actually flying out of the water on the up stroke and I couldn't stop laughing.

Fifty fish later I simply couldn't fish any more I was just flat out tired. The sand bass were great and ready to fight, and fight they did!

If your looking for a great fight and a great slab to do it with pick up some Lead Babies Slabs from the folks at Alluring Lures and Tackle in Cordell or contact Doug at Oklahomafishingguides.com you wont be disappointed. The three I was using are pictured above. Good fishing, all sand bass were caught and released.

Cloudy day Saugeye on Tom Steed

I started the day out bass fishing at Lake Tom Steed but the bite was slow. Through out the week I had seen an angler or two pull a Saugeye from the lake so I decided to do some trolling. About an hour and half later I had several hybrids and three nice Saugeye with the largest at 24".

I decided to share the fun and give my fishing partner Keith (The Surf Rod) Aldridge a call. Keith met me at the ramp and we were off for more. After only 2 hours Keith had manged to pull several more hybrid and three more Saugeye as I guided him around the lake and would have had five total for him self if two of them had not spit the hook right at the boat.

What a great day to fish with the clouds and cooler weather.

Lake Texoma Fishing Report

On Sunday, a couple of buddies and I went fishing on Lake Texoma on the Oklahoma side.

The wind was blowing in pretty hard during the lunch hour as the "cold" front was coming through. It made fishing a bit difficult and handling the boat was rough at times.

Most of our normal tactics were not working during the heat of the day, so I decided to take us over to a shoal off a point where I've always caught all kinds of fish.

The wind had moved around and was coming out of the east, so we would motor near the shore on one deep side and let the wind push us across the shoal the other side which was also deep.

The fish finder was marking all kinds of fish in both the deep water and across the shoal, but nothing was working until we switched over to slabs. Then the action started!

My buddy Rob caught this nice striper on a slab he bought at Alberta Creek Marina. I caught a HUGE drum, 20 - 25 lbs on a Lead Babies Slab. Rob has the catch on his iPhone as a video, so once he sends it, I link it up to this post.

One more note: remember to put on major sunscreen this 4th of July. We used SPF 30 and it might as well have been SPF 0. We were crispy critters on Monday! The flood has slowed some action down that should be going on by this time, such as good morning topwater and slabbing. Bait fishing has been real good all over the lake but the shad can and have been hard to come by on many days.

I have been fishing on anchor in water anywhere from 37 feet to 70 feet deep. I have been in the middle to the East part of the lake towards the dam. I have been catching anywhere from 4 cranks off the bottom to fishing them in the deeper water at between 50 & 60 feet deep. I have drifted water on windy days with some wind cover from 14 to 28 feet deep catching larger fish. Have heard reports of fish hitting topwater in the evenings but I am out with customers in the morning times. Smaller fish are on top right now.

As I said, Fishing is real good right now but I am really wanting some lure fishing to start up very soon, as it is past time. Don't know how often I can post over here but I will try if Doug keeps a reminder on me.

Sterling Smith
Texoma "T" Striper Guide Service

Lake Records Program Expanded to 28 Lakes

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation's Lake Record Fish Program continues to grow, with several new lake records — and lakes — added throughout this spring.

Last year, there were 13 lakes and this year it has been expanded to 28! Mayo

Lake Wetumka

The Lake Record Fish program recognizes anglers who catch a fish that qualifies as a record setter for the lake in which it was caught. Though the program was established as a way to serve anglers and recognize significant fish, it also serves as an indicator of trophy fish production in the state's lakes.

Since last year, the program has doubled in size and there are now twenty-eight lakes currently enrolled in the program. An easy-to-use search feature is available through the Wildlife Department's Web site to view all kinds of interesting record fish information, ranging from the size of record fish caught to what kind of bait or rod and reel was used to catch them. To access the search feature, log on to wildlifedepartment.com.

Anglers who catch a potential record from a participating lake should contact designated business locations around the lake that are enrolled as lake record keepers, or vendors. The lake record keeper may then enter the fish into an automated database via the Internet. Once it has been determined that an angler has landed a record fish, the media is notified and the public will be able to view information about the catch on the Wildlife Department's Web site at wildlifedepartment.com.

All past and current state record fish are registered in the Lake Record Fish Program as records for their respective lakes.

Species eligible for spots in the lake records book include:

blue catfish

channel

flathead catfish

largemouth bass

smallmouth bass

spotted bass

crappie

paddlefish

striped bass

striped bass hybrids

sunfish (combined)

walleye/saugeye

white bass

Minimum weights are set for each species included to avoid a rush of potential yet easily broken records early in the program's inception.

For more information about the new Lake Record Fish Program or for contact information for lake record keepers, log on to wildlifedepartment.com.

Invasive Algae in Lower Mountain Fork River

The recent discovery of an invasive alga in a southeast Oklahoma river serves to remind anglers of their role in helping prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance species.

Biologists with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation and the University of Oklahoma recently confirmed the presence of Didymosphenia geminata, also known by anglers as “Didymo” or “rock snot,” in the Lower Mountain Fork River below Broken Bow Lake. The invasive species is native to North America and thrives in low-nutrient, cold, flowing streams rich in oxygen, such as the Lower Mountain Fork River, the Lower Illinois River and the Blue River.

Didymo starts out as small tufted colonies, but can grow into dense, thick mats that cover large portions of a streambed.

“When it forms extensive mats or produces large blooms, rock snot can outcompete native algae relied on by aquatic insects,” said Curtis Tackett, aquatic nuisance biologist for the Wildlife Department. “That may not sound like a problem, except that those insects provide an important source of food for trout in the Lower Mountain Fork River.”

Tackett said that in some cases, the reduction of available food sources for trout because of competition from invasive species like Didymo can result in smaller fish. Additionally, Didymo can clog water pipes and other flow structures as well as become quite a nuisance to anglers because of how easily it can be snagged by a fish hook.

“Anglers can help prevent further spread of Didymo and other aquatic nuisance species, and it just takes a little bit of effort,” Tackett said. “But that effort can go a long way.”

According to Tackett, the following measures can be taken to prevent the spread of aquatic nuisance species:

Before leaving a river or stream, remove all clumps of algae and look for hidden fragments.

Soak and scrub all gear for at least one minute in a two percent bleach solution, or five percent salt solution, or simply use hot water and dishwashing soap.

If cleaning is not practical, then wait at least 48 hours before contact with another water body after equipment has dried.

Consider keeping two sets of wading boots, and alternate their use between cleaning and drying. * Avoid using felt-soled waders.

Avoid wading through colonies of the algae. Breaking up the material could cause future colonies and blooms to occur further downstream.

For more information about the Lower Mountain Fork River trout fishery, log on to the Wildlife Department's Web site at wildlifedepartment.com.

Ducan Fishing & Tackle Show

The City of Duncan is having a fishing and tackle show Jun 5 - 6, 2009. The license is required of all persons, resident or nonresident, who charge or accept consideration to take someone fishing. The only exemption is for landowners or lessees who provide such services on their own property and those who assist a licensed guide in the same boat.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2010, fishing guides applying for a license must provide the Wildlife Department with documentation stating they have completed boat training through the National Association of Safe Boating Administrators, which is available readily online or at locations throughout Oklahoma. They also must provide the Wildlife Department with proof of commercial general liability insurance covering services as a fishing guide with policy limits of at least $500,000 per occurrence.

Additionally, fishing guides must maintain current boat inspection by any governmental agency or entity authorized to perform such inspections, and they must be certified by the American Red Cross in CPR and basic first aid.

“Other states, including Texas, have guide license requirements, and I am confident this will benefit our anglers and guides,” said Barry Bolton, chief of fisheries for the Wildlife Department. “We hope to maintain a list of licensed guides to help anglers identify guides and get ‘hooked up,' so to speak.”

Free Fishing Weekend!

This weekend is Oklahoma's annual Free Fishing Weekend! Today was my Granddaughters first time on the boat and my Daughter went with us as well. We enjoyed a nice cruise together and then spent 40 minutes trolling through some of my honey holes. All I can say is wow. Within three minutes we had our first hybrid and the kids liked that. For the next 35 minutes we enjoyed the lake and pulled three nice crappie and two more hybrids and then headed in before the boat traffic picked up. Nice crappie can still be caught (See picture) as well as hybrid and catfish are biting. Enjoy the weekend and please be safe. The fishing is about as good as it can get right now. Once you find the fish, they are biting like crazy. When I’m on the fish we are catching a limit in about 30 minutes as fast as I can take fish off the hook and re-bait. I’m fishing with bait on anchor in 30-40’ of water. Most have been coming off of the ledges near the river channel. It is best to avoid the muddiest water and fish the stained or clear parts of the lake. A lot of the fish that I have been catching have been smaller and I’ve been moving a lot to find the larger fish but I have managed to find some 20” fish on every trip ranging up to 12lbs. Fish are eating practically everything you throw at them right now. Lures are working as well. We are catching them on topwaters, sassys, and slabs. Some people are using minnows instead of shad and having success. (Click on pictures to view larger images.)

Since we are catching our limits so fast we get to play for the rest of the time out on the water. Depending on what my customers want, I’ll either lure fish, trophy fish, or try to catch some catfish to add to the box. We were lure fishing after a quick limit on Tuesday throwing topwaters when we caught this 7lb black bass. It was the biggest black bass I’ve caught on Texoma in 10 years. He blew up on a big pencil popper near the bank.

My weekends are filling up a month in advance. There are a few slots left on the weekends in May but not many. The weekdays are relatively open so if you can get off during the week, not is the time to come fishing, the fish are going crazy!

Editor's Note: Thanks for the report and pictures Brian. It was awesome! And once again, I nailed all these fish on my favorite setup; a Hookhider road with a wacky rigged Maniac 4" Cinnamon Crawfish Salt Stick. Needless to say, after lunch, everybody else rigged up with the same wacky rig and we all continued to nail fish all day long. I even caught a 5lb black drum on the rig!

On Sunday, the wind was brutal, and the wacky rig was less effective. The wind created too much slack in the line to feel the subtle hits, so we all switched over to War Eagle Spinnerbaits and the trusty Bitin' Titan Spinnerbaits. We caught just about every kind of fish the lake has; largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, kentucky bass, white bass, and bluegill. Just an absolutely awesome birthday fishing trip.

Saturday night, Colby's dad Pete, whipped up an awesome birthday fish fry; fresh kentucky bass, BBQ beans, cole slaw, pan-fried potatoes and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Thank you Pete and Colby for driving down from KC to fish with me on my birthday! And a huge thank you to Lake Tenkiler fishing guide Rocky Thomas for getting us on fish all day long, 2 days in a row, even with the major wind on Sunday. As I've always said, the weather only bothers the fisherman, but the fish are still hungry.

If you would like to go fishing with Rocky on Lake Tenkiller or other lakes he fishes in the area, such as Grand Lake, Lake Greenleaf, Lake Hudson, Lake Robert S. Lake Texoma water temperature has now climbed into the 60° range and the fishing is just about as good as it gets! I’m just starting to see the 1st stages of the shad spawn which means the first topwater bite of the season has begun and will last for the next 3-4 weeks or so. I’m catching my limit in about an hour right now and catching and releasing until we run out of bait. We brought back 110 fish yesterday with a 2 boat trip and we probably threw back another 50 fish. A 10 year old boy caught 24 fish by himself yesterday.

I’m catching most of my fish on anchor over a ledge in the 30’ range using live bait. The topwater bite is just starting to turn on. Using topwaters along rocky banks in front of the egrets is starting to work and will become red hot, catching a fish on almost every cast, in the next couple of weeks.

This is the end of my grand opening special ($100/person) which last until 4/30, after which, prices will be 125$/person. Book before 4/30 and you will be able to go fishing anytime through out the year for that rate. Since we are catching a limit so fast right now, you will have a few different options to fill the rest of your time. When we near the limit, I can start throwing back fish until we kill enough fish to reach the limit or we run out of bait, we can lure fish, I can go try to find a big fish, or we can try to catch some catfish. You may book your trip online or you can call me at (903)815-1609. Hope to see you soon!

Your Lake Texoma Fishing Guide, Brian Prichard, Stripers Inc. (Click on pictures to view larger images.)

Editor's Note: Thanks for the report and pictures Brian. The fishing is picking up again at Lake Tom Steed and should improve quickly with good, steady warm weather. Catfish are biting on worms, bass are slow but will improve quickly, saugeye are post spawn and slow, but the big word today is crappie.

Crappie fishermen are hitting the creek and main lake hard and good numbers are being caught. I got tired of the slow bass bite so I decided to show the crappie fishermen what keepers looked like with two nice ones caught one after the other over 1.5lbs.

Editor's Note: Thanks for the pictures and report Mike! The fishing has picked up a bit but it remains hit and miss due to the sporadic weather patterns. We are still catching some big fish here and there but most remain up river spawning at this point. We are catching a lot of smaller fish but if you pick through these small ones then you can keep a limit of good fish. I expect the fishing to explode any time now when the fish get back from spawning as they seem to have been gone for several weeks now. All of this recent rain should help to speed up their return.

Fish have been holding close to the humps and ledges at around 25-35’. Using bait on anchor over structure of this depth seems to be working best. One day the fish will feed better in the morning and the next day the bite will be better in the evening. I’ve tried throwing lures a little with limited success, most all of my fish have been coming off of bait.

I currently have a evening trip for Sat. the 18th and a morning trip on the Sun. the 19th left for this weekend. My weekend trips are filling up fast in May so if you want a weekend you need to book now. There are only 2 weeks left with my grand opening special of $100/person which ends April 30th. Remember you do not have to go fishing before that time, as long as you get your trip booked before then you can reserve that price and go fishing whenever you want within this year. Good Luck and hope to see you soon. Book your trip online at www.stripersinc.com or call 903-815-1609.

New Lake Thunderbird Bass Record

A day that started cold and miserable last Sunday for Oklahoma city police officer Kenny Davis ended fabulously.

Davis landed a 10.8-pound largemouth bass from Lake Thunderbird near Norman that might even change the future of bass fishing at the reservoir.
